This week has been dedicated to setting up my MIG welder and preparing the welding area for practice sessions. Since my welder is larger and more powerful than any I've used before, it's been a period of experimentation and adjustment. Determining the optimal voltage and wire speed has involved some trial and error. Unfortunately, the cheat sheet provided by the welder didn't include settings for 12-gauge steel, so I had to conduct online research to find suitable parameters. After digging and testing, I discovered that 18 volts and a wire speed 200 work best for my purposes. Additionally, I've learned the importance of not resting the tip of my welding gun directly on the metal but maintaining about a quarter inch, which helps achieve a better balance in my welding technique.
With all this set up to get me ready to start welding my large sculpture I found another artist that used ropes in her creations. Her name is Jackie Winsor
Jackie Winsor is regarded as an intriguing artist for several reasons:
Material Exploration: Winsor is known for her innovative use of materials. She often works with non-traditional materials such as wood, hemp, and wire, creating sculptures that challenge conventional notions of form and structure. Her exploration of materials adds depth to her work and invites viewers to reconsider the possibilities of everyday objects.
Spatial Awareness: Winsor's sculptures often interact with space in dynamic ways. Whether through their scale, arrangement, or negative space, her works invite viewers to consider the relationship between object and environment. By exploring concepts of volume, density, and spatial tension, Winsor creates installations that engage viewers on both a physical and conceptual level.
Feminist Perspective: As a female artist working in a male-dominated art world, Winsor's work is often seen through a feminist lens. While not overtly political, her exploration of materials, process, and space can be interpreted as a reflection on gender roles, labor, and the body. Through her art, Winsor challenges traditional hierarchies and opens new possibilities for artistic expression.
Overall, Jackie Winsor's work is interesting for its innovative use of materials, engagement with Minimalism and Conceptual Art, process-oriented approach, exploration of space, and feminist perspective. Through her sculptures, Winsor invites viewers to reconsider the fundamental elements of art and engage with the complexities of the world around them.
